The Blackburn Kangaroo was one of the least likely entrants in the 1919 England-Australia air race — a twin-engine bomber hastily converted for long-distance flight, it retired in Crete after engine failure and never came close to finishing. The race itself, funded by the Australian government with a £10,000 prize, was won by the Vickers Vimy crew of Ross and Keith Smith in just under 28 days. The Kangaroo's failure is almost entirely forgotten outside aviation history circles, which makes its appearance in this series a deliberate curatorial choice rather than an obvious one.
