| Opis awersu | The obverse features a large silver proof outer ring with the legend ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA incused along the upper periphery and the date 2005 along the lower periphery, all in raised lettering. Inset at centre is a smaller gold-plated coin reproducing the 1855 Sydney Mint Half Sovereign design, depicting a youthful, bare-headed effigy of Queen Victoria facing left, with her hair drawn back and tied in a bun. The legend VICTORIA D: G: BRITANNIAR: REGINA F: D: encircles the central effigy on the inset coin, with the date 1855 appearing in the exergue. A small cameo effigy of Queen Elizabeth II in the Ian Rank-Broadley fourth portrait appears at the top of the outer ring, serving as the contemporary issuing authority's portrait. The combination creates a bi-material commemorative composition evoking 150 years of Australian coinage history. |

The wreath is rendered in fine relief, characteristic of the original Sydney Mint coinage.
