The surf lifesaving movement in Australia dates to 1907, and this coin was struck to mark that centenary. Surf Life Saving Australia, formed after a series of drownings at Sydney's ocean beaches prompted lifesaving clubs to organize formally, became one of the country's most recognizable volunteer institutions.
