The Land Series, launched by the Royal Australian Mint in 2008, used pad printing technology to apply colour directly onto circulating coinage — an uncommon technique for coins intended for everyday use rather than collector sets. The koala dollar was part of a five-coin release covering native fauna, each distinguished by a coloured vignette bonded to the aluminium bronze surface.
Pad printing on circulation strikes creates long-term durability questions, and heavily used examples routinely show colour degradation at the edges of the printed area.
