Obverse description The fourth definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, depicted in right-facing profile wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The legend ELIZABETH II encircles the upper field, with AUSTRALIA and the date 2008 below, accompanied by the designer's initials IRB beneath the truncation of the neck.

Reverse description A pad-printed polychrome depiction of a koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) seated frontally and clinging to the trunk of a eucalypt tree, rendered in naturalistic colour against the struck aluminium-bronze field. Eucalyptus foliage is shown to the right of the animal, with the stylised tree bark rendered in relief to the left. The denomination legend 1 DOLLAR appears in raised lettering across the upper field, with the numeral 1 to the left and DOLLAR to the right.
