| Descrizione del rovescio | The reverse presents a finely detailed side-profile relief of the Australian light cruiser HMAS Sydney II underway at sea, rendered in a slightly elevated relief against a mirror-polished field, with intricate engraving capturing the ship's superstructure, gun turrets, masts, funnels, and bow wave. The Perth Mint 'P' mintmark appears to the right of the vessel. In the lower portion of the field, the legend 'HMAS SYDNEY II' is boldly inscribed in large lettering, with the commemorative dates '19 NOVEMBER 1941 - 16 MARCH 2008' centred below, marking respectively the date of the ship's loss in battle and the discovery of the wreck. |

HMAS Sydney (II) was lost on 19 November 1941 off the coast of Western Australia after an engagement with the German auxiliary cruiser HSK Kormoran — both ships sank, but Sydney went down with all 645 hands, making it Australia's largest single naval loss of the Second World War. The wreck was not located until March 2008, found in over 2,470 metres of water roughly 207 kilometres west of Shark Bay. This coin was issued the same year as that discovery.
