HMAS Sydney (II) was lost on 19 November 1941 off the coast of Western Australia after an engagement with the German auxiliary cruiser HSK Kormoran — both ships sank, but Sydney went down with all 645 hands, making it Australia's largest single naval loss of the Second World War. The wreck was not located until March 2008, found in over 2,470 metres of water roughly 207 kilometres west of Shark Bay. This coin was issued the same year as that discovery.
