Obverse description Crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the George IV State Diadem and a draped bodice, as modelled by sculptor Cecil Thomas. The portrait is rendered in high relief with fine detail in the hair and crown. The circumferential legend reads QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND, disposed around the periphery and bordered by a continuous dentilated rim.

Reverse description A crowned lion passant guardant, facing left and holding an orb in its right forepaw, occupies the central field. The date appears in the exergue beneath the lion. The bilingual legend HONG KONG and its Chinese equivalent 香港 arc across the upper periphery, while ONE DOLLAR and the Chinese 壹圓 are disposed in the lower and lateral fields respectively. The design is enclosed within a dentilated border.
