Trinidad and Tobago's decimal coinage series was introduced in 1964, two years after independence from Britain, with designs commissioned from the Royal Mint. The 1971 dollar falls within the early production run of this series, struck at the Royal Mint in Llantrisant, which had only relocated from Tower Hill the previous year — making these among the first Caribbean issues produced at the new Welsh facility.
