The Cook Islands has issued commemorative dollars under its own authority since 1972, a consequence of its status as a self-governing territory in free association with New Zealand — legally entitled to produce coinage while holding no independent monetary system in practice. This piece belongs to a long-running series reproducing the Morgan Dollar design, originally created by George T. Morgan and struck by the United States Mint from 1878 through 1921.
