This is one piece in a 24-coin silver series issued by Niue commemorating Dante's Divine Comedy, released around the 700th anniversary of the poem's composition, traditionally dated to circa 1308–1320. Niue has become a prolific vehicle for themed collector series issued under New Zealand monetary authority, its nominal face value carrying no practical circulation intent.
The fifth installment in the sequence places it within the Inferno canticle by most series arrangements — Dante's descent had 34 cantos, making the numbering across 24 coins an editorial compression rather than a strict canto correspondence.
