Canadian Tire "money" occupies a genuinely odd legal position — it is not currency, not a cheque, and not a gift card in the modern sense, but a loyalty discount coupon that the Canadian Bank Note Company printed to the same security standards as federal paper money. The CBC contract was deliberate: counterfeiting concerns were real, and by the 1980s a secondary market had developed where the coupons traded at slight discounts to face value at flea markets and small retailers who accepted them informally.
The 1985 series followed format revisions prompted by earlier counterfeiting incidents. Some issues from this period are known with minor plate inconsistencies in the serial numbering, though not at a level that generates serious specialist attention.
