| 裏面の説明 | A finely detailed portrait of a Black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) facing right, rendered in high relief and occupying the majority of the coin's field, with the animal's distinctive double horn and textured hide prominently depicted. The conservation legend 'PRESERVE PLANET EARTH' arcs along the upper periphery in incuse lettering. The denomination '$1' appears in the lower field beneath the rhinoceros portrait, flanked by the coin's reeded edge. |

Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993 after a thirty-year armed struggle, and the Bank of Eritrea began issuing its first national coinage almost immediately — this 1994 series being among the earliest pieces struck under sovereign authority. The black rhinoceros reverse is notable given that the species had been functionally extinct in Eritrea for decades by the time this coin was struck, making the choice more aspirational than documentary.
