Noorah Alsagoff was one of Singapore's most prominent Malay philanthropists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, known for financing mosques, schools, and charitable institutions across the region using wealth accumulated through the Alsagoff family's extensive trading networks. The Aranda orchid series — issued by MAS as legal tender collectibles — assigns each variety to a notable Singaporean figure, making the coin's subject as deliberate a choice as its botanical namesake.
The Aranda orchid itself is a hybrid genus developed in Singapore, where the National Parks Board has long used orchid naming as a form of civic honor.
