Obverse description The coat of arms of the Somali Republic occupies the central field, depicting a heraldic shield with horizontal lines charged with a five-pointed star, supported by two leopards rampant on either side, surmounted by a mural crown, and resting upon crossed palm fronds. The legend 'SOMALI REPUBLIC' arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin lettering, while the denomination 'ONE DOLLAR' is inscribed along the lower periphery. A beaded inner border frames the entire design.

Additional information

Somalia had no functioning central government in 2006 — the Transitional Federal Government existed largely on paper, controlling little territory while clan militias and the Islamic Courts Union contested Mogadishu. Coins nominally issued under the Somali state during this period were not products of any domestic mint and saw no meaningful domestic circulation. Most were produced speculatively for the collector and novelty market by foreign private minting operations licensing the Somali name.
