A circular marginal legend in Arabic occupies the outer band between two concentric linear borders, recording the mint name of Valencia (Balansiya) and the date of issue (AH 477). The flan is irregular and somewhat crude in execution, characteristic of hammered copper coinage of the Taifa period. |

The Taifa of Valencia emerged after the collapse of the Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba in 1031, when the fragmentation of al-Andalus produced dozens of petty kingdoms competing for survival. Yahya II al-Qadir ruled an unstable realm, eventually becoming notorious for his dependency on Christian military support — he would later invite El Cid himself to intervene on his behalf. Copper dirhams of this period reflect the monetary degradation that followed the end of Caliphal silver production at Medina Azahara.
Vives 1118 is among the less frequently encountered taifa copper types.
