Obverse description Hammered silver dirham of irregular flan with multiple lines of Arabic Kufic script filling the central field. The central inscription comprises the Shahada and the name of the ruler Husam al-Dawla, arranged in horizontal registers within a plain inner circle. A circular marginal legend runs around the periphery, bearing the mint and date formula recording the coin's striking at Mawsil in the year 397 AH. The surfaces show characteristic die-struck relief typical of early medieval Islamic hammered coinage, with some flatness and die shift consistent with hand-struck production.
