| Obverse description | Bearded male head facing right, depicted in profile within a plain inner circle, surrounded by a marginal Arabic legend in the outer field. The portrait reflects a Byzantine artistic influence commonly adopted by Danishmendid coinage of the mid-12th century. The facial features are rendered in low relief, characteristic of the hammered copper issues of this dynasty. |

The Danishmendids ruled a fragmented Anatolian principality caught between Byzantine resurgence and Seljuk pressure, and their coinage reflects that precarious position — heavily influenced by both Islamic and local Christian iconographic traditions in ways that made their issues genuinely unlike anything produced by their neighbors. Dhu'l-Qarnayn, the ruler name invoked here, is the Quranic epithet for a legendary world-conquering king, almost certainly a political claim rather than a literal name, adopted to project authority the dynasty had to continually defend militarily.
