Al-Musta'in II ruled the Taifa of Zaragoza during one of the most politically volatile periods of Iberian history, navigating alliances with both Christian kingdoms and other taifas with calculated pragmatism. He employed El Cid — Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar — as a mercenary commander for several years, a relationship that shaped military operations across the Ebro valley in the 1080s and 1090s. Copper fractional issues from the taifa period are poorly documented in contemporary hoards, suggesting limited and localized circulation rather than broad monetary integration.
