Obverse description Central field bears a five-line Arabic Kufic inscription arranged in horizontal registers, comprising the Shahada (Islamic profession of faith) followed by the name of the local ruler Al-Husayn ibn al-Hasan and the mint name Tunkath. The central inscription is enclosed within a double linear border. An outer marginal legend in Arabic script runs around the circumference, containing the Quranic verse from Surat al-Tawba (9:33) affirming the supremacy of Islam. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, typical of hammered Islamic dirhams of the Qarakhanid period.
