| Obverse description | Hammered gold dinar of typical Abbasid-influenced epigraphic style, entirely devoid of figurative imagery. The central field bears the Islamic profession of faith (Shahada) in three lines of Kufic script, surrounded by a concentric inner marginal legend recording the mint name (Sijistan) and the date of issue (391 AH) in Arabic. An outer marginal band carries the Quranic verse of mission (Quran 9:33) in flowing Kufic, running continuously around the coin's circumference. The flan is irregular in outline, characteristic of hand-struck medieval Islamic gold coinage. All lettering is raised against a flat, unadorned field. |
