The Buyid amirs operated under a constitutional fiction that defined their entire coinage program: they controlled the caliphate militarily from 945 onward yet were Shia rulers obligated to strike coins in the name of the Sunni Abbasid caliph in Baghdad, whose authority they had effectively nullified. The laqab "Mu'ayyid al-Dawla" — Supporter of the Dynasty — was granted by that same captive caliph, a political formality both parties understood to mean nothing.
Al-Muhammadiya was a mint city in the Jibal region, the Buyid heartland in western Iran.
