The Regency of Algiers operated as an Ottoman tributary state from 1516, but by the early seventeenth century its rulers exercised considerable de facto autonomy — coinage being one of the clearest expressions of that independence. Ahmed I ibn Mohammed ruled as Dey in the years bracketing 1604, and gold dinars of this type circulated primarily in commercial transactions with Mediterranean trading partners rather than in everyday local exchange.
KM#4 is scarce in any condition. Survivors overwhelmingly appear to have passed through European collections, likely acquired through the extensive diplomatic and commercial contact between Algiers and Italian city-states during this period.
