| Obverse description | Central square frame enclosing six lines of Kufic Arabic religious and dynastic inscriptions arranged in horizontal registers, reading the Basmala, the Shahada, acknowledgment of Muhammad as the Prophet, recognition of the Mahdi as imam of the community, and the title and name of the caliph Abu Ya'qub Yusuf. The area outside the central square is filled with additional marginal inscriptions running along all four sides within a beaded border. The entire field exhibits the characteristic Almohad square-in-circle layout rendered in bold hammered relief on an irregularly shaped flan of bright yellow gold. |
