Christopher I ruled Baden from 1475 until his death in 1527, presiding over a margraviate caught between the ambitions of the Habsburgs and the fracturing loyalties of the early Reformation years. The Dicken — derived from the German word for "thick" — emerged as a denomination in the Swiss and South German monetary sphere during the late fifteenth century, a regional response to the demand for heavier silver coins capable of handling larger transactions without resorting to gold.
Wielandt's Baden corpus remains the authoritative reference for this series. Few examples circulated far from the Upper Rhine.
