Gregory di Montelongo reached the Patriarchate of Aquileia not through ecclesiastical appointment but through a military and diplomatic career — he had served as papal legate in northern Italy during the wars against Frederick II, commanding troops in the field and excommunicating enemies of the papacy with equal efficiency. His denari reflect the period when Aquileia's patriarchs wielded genuine temporal power over Friuli, minting in their own name as secular lords as much as churchmen.
