Reverse description Central device depicts a high-relief reproduction of a historical Byzantine follis coin, shown as a raised medallion with irregular, worn edges evoking an antique numismatic specimen. The depicted coin displays a large letter 'M' (the Byzantine mark of value for 40 nummi) at its centre, flanked by abbreviated Greek legends, with the mint mark 'NIKO' (for Nicomedia) inscribed in the exergue. A circular Cyrillic legend arcs along the upper periphery reading 'НАРОДНА БАНКА НА РЕПУБЛИКА МАКЕДОНИЈА', while the denomination '1' is prominently displayed at the lower centre, flanked by 'ДЕНАР' to the left and 'DENAR' to the right in bilingual inscription.

Additional information

Issued to mark the two-thousandth anniversary of Christianity, this piece was produced by a country navigating an awkward diplomatic position — the newly independent Republic of Macedonia was at the time locked in a prolonged dispute with Greece over its very name, a conflict that kept it out of NATO and delayed EU candidacy for over a decade. A commemorative silver issue from a state whose international legal identity was still contested is an unusual artifact in any collection.
