The hair is curled and the beard is short, consistent with contemporary portraiture of the monarch. The peripheral legend is engraved in raised Latin lettering within a beaded border. A small circular countermark depicting a rampant lion within a dotted border — applied by the County of Holland between 1573 and 1574 — is visible in the right field of the coin. The date 1561, referring to the original striking of the Philipsdaalder, appears in the lower legend. |
