The klippe piedfort format — square flan, double weight — was never intended for circulation. These were presentation pieces, struck for gifting to foreign dignitaries, civic officials, or as personal keepsakes for mint masters themselves. West Friesland's mint at Hoorn was one of the more active provincial mints during the later Dutch Republic, and piéforts of the Leeuwendaalder were among the prestige objects it produced to demonstrate striking quality and institutional pride.
The date appearing on the reverse rather than the obverse is the diagnostic detail that separates Wf 17.4 from related varieties in the Delmonte sequence.
