Obverse description A square klippe flan with a circular design field bordered by a beaded inner ring. At centre, a fully armoured knight stands facing left, brandishing a sword aloft in his right hand and resting his left hand upon a shield emblazoned with a rampant lion. A billowing cloak drapes behind the figure. The encircling Latin legend reads MO · ARG · PRO · CONFOE · BELG · WEST, identifying this as the silver coinage of the Confederate Netherlands of West Friesland. The design is executed in the robust, high-relief hammered style typical of Dutch provincial coinage of the seventeenth century.
