Obverse description The obverse of this square klippe piedfort displays a boldly struck circular design field enclosed within a beaded inner border. At center stands the armored Knight of the Netherlands, depicted in three-quarter view facing left, holding a drawn sword upright in his right hand and a bundle of arrows — symbolizing the Union of Utrecht — in his left, with a crowned shield bearing the rampant lion of the Dutch provinces at his feet. The circular Latin legend MO · ARG · PRO · CONFOE · BELG · WEST · runs between the beaded border and the outer rim of the design field, identifying this as silver coinage of the confederated Netherlands of West Frisia. The overall execution reflects the vigorous, slightly rustic hammered style typical of Dutch provincial mint production of the early seventeenth century.
