The date is divided by the arms of the cross, with numerals appearing in the four quadrants of the field. A circular Latin legend surrounds the entire design, reading PHS D G HISP Z REX DVX BRA, identifying Philip II as King of Spain and Duke of Brabant. The lettering is rendered in large Gothic-influenced characters separated by pellets, consistent with the hammered coinage conventions of the Habsburg Netherlands. |
