Brazil's 1966 monetary reform lopped three zeros off the cruzeiro, creating the cruzeiro novo at a rate of 1,000:1. Rather than wait for entirely new stock, the Banco Central simply overstamped existing 1,000 Cruzeiros notes — P#173 — with the new denomination. It was a pragmatic stopgap, but it produced two distinct signature combinations tied to the transition between Octávio Gouvêa de Bulhões's ministerial tenure and the institutional reshuffling that followed.
The cruzeiro novo itself was short-lived; by 1970 it had been quietly renamed back to "cruzeiro," making this overprint series a relic of a denomination that existed in name for under four years.
