| Descrizione del rovescio | The reverse displays the elaborate crowned quartered arms of Philip II of Spain, incorporating the heraldic devices of Castile, León, Aragon, Sicily, Granada, Austria, Burgundy, Brabant, Flanders, Tyrol, and Portugal, the latter's inclusion being a distinctive feature of this issue following Philip's annexation of Portugal in 1580. The shield is surmounted by an imperial crown of elaborate form. The letter P appears to the left and right of the shield, serving as a mint or privy mark. The surrounding Latin legend DOMINVS MIHI ADIVTOR P P — meaning 'The Lord is my helper' — is divided by the shield, running along the periphery of the irregularly shaped flan. The engraving is characteristic of the accomplished die-cutting tradition of the Spanish Netherlands mints. |
