| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central field occupied by a quartered shield of arms surmounted by an elaborate royal crown, the dexter impalement bearing the fleur-de-lis of France and the sinister bearing the lion rampant of Scotland, reflecting Mary's dual status as Queen of Scots and Queen Dowager of France. The shield is rendered in high relief with fine engraved detail consistent with mid-sixteenth-century Scottish hammered coinage. The circumferential Latin legend, interrupted by the date 1561 at the top, reads MARIA · DEI · GRA · SCOTORVM · REGINA, identifying the issuer as Mary, by the Grace of God, Queen of Scots. The lettering is executed in bold Gothic-influenced characters with pellet stops throughout. The flan is irregular in shape, characteristic of the hammered production technique employed at the Edinburgh Mint. |
