The shield is rendered in high relief with fine engraved detail consistent with mid-sixteenth-century Scottish hammered coinage. The circumferential Latin legend, interrupted by the date 1561 at the top, reads MARIA · DEI · GRA · SCOTORVM · REGINA, identifying the issuer as Mary, by the Grace of God, Queen of Scots. The lettering is executed in bold Gothic-influenced characters with pellet stops throughout. The flan is irregular in shape, characteristic of the hammered production technique employed at the Edinburgh Mint. |
