The legend 'ISLE OF MAN' arcs along the left periphery and 'ELIZABETH II' along the right, both in raised Latin capitals within a finely beaded border. The date '1979' appears in the lower field beneath the truncation of the bust. A small 'PM' privy mark for the Pobjoy Mint is visible just above the date. Struck to commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of Tynwald, the Isle of Man's parliament and one of the oldest continuous legislative assemblies in the world. The 979 AD gathering on Tynwald Hill — a tiered mound at St John's — is accepted as the founding session, though Norse administrative structures on the island almost certainly predate that recorded meeting.
The Manx government issued an unusually broad range of metals for this anniversary program, making the copper-nickel crown the workhorse of the series rather than its centerpiece.
