| Aanvullende informatie |
Douglas Bader lost both legs in a 1931 aerobatic crash at Reading Aerodrome — an accident that nearly killed him and should have ended his flying career permanently. The RAF invalided him out, but he fought his way back into service by 1939 and went on to lead No. 242 Squadron during the Battle of Britain. He was captured in 1941 after a mid-air collision over France, and the Germans famously allowed the RAF to drop him a replacement prosthetic leg during his captivity.
The Isle of Man issued this crown in the year of Bader's death, which came in September 1982 — making this a commemorative struck while its subject was still alive, by less than a year.
