Additional information

Patrick Miller of Dalswinton, Scotland conducted his first successful steamboat trial on Dalswinton Loch in October 1788, making the 1988 issue a bicentennial commemoration. Miller financed the experiment himself, having retired wealthy from banking, and partnered with engineer William Symington to build the twin-hulled craft. The Isle of Man issued a series of crowns that year marking early steam pioneers — Miller's trial predates the better-known Clermont by nearly two decades.
