Tynwald — the parliament of the Isle of Man — claims continuous operation since 979 AD, making it arguably the oldest continuously functioning parliament in the world. The 1979 millennial issue marked exactly one thousand years from that founding, a claim the Manx government has promoted with considerable political enthusiasm, though historians note the documentary record before the 12th century is fragmentary at best.
Pobjoy struck this type for the Isle of Man Treasury during their long exclusive minting contract with the island, which produced an unusually high volume of commemorative crown-sized pieces throughout the late 1970s and 1980s.
