The 1979 Manx crown series was issued to commemorate the millennium of Tynwald, the Isle of Man's parliament, which traces its origins to 979 AD when Norse settlers established an assembly on the hill at St. John's. Tynwald's claim to unbroken continuity for a thousand years makes it one of the oldest continuous parliamentary bodies in the world — a fact the Manx government leveraged aggressively in this commemorative program.
The Pobjoy Mint, which held the contract for Manx coinage from 1973, struck multiple reverse varieties across this crown series in the same year.
