The 1970 Manx Cat crown was issued the same year the Isle of Man gained greater autonomy over its postal and fiscal affairs, and the Pobjoy Mint — which would become closely associated with Manx coinage — was not yet involved; these early crowns were struck at the Royal Mint. The .925 silver version was produced in limited numbers alongside a cupro-nickel circulation issue, with the silver intended primarily for collectors rather than any meaningful commercial use.
