The College of Arms received its royal charter from Richard III in 1484, and this platinum issue marks exactly five centuries from that grant. The Isle of Man Treasury was among the most aggressive producers of precious metal commemoratives in the 1980s, releasing the same crown design across multiple metal variants — gold, silver, and platinum — a practice that drew collectors and speculators in roughly equal measure.
At .950 fineness and 52 grams, the platinum version was by far the costliest to produce, minted in small quantities aimed squarely at the institutional and high-net-worth market then developing around platinum bullion instruments.
