He stands at the bow or bridge rail of a naval vessel, hands clasped, with a stylised seascape and billowing clouds rendered in the background field. Two diagonal ribbon-like banners bearing the inscriptions ADMIRAL OF THE FLEET and HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS / THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH traverse the lower centre of the design. The Duke of Edinburgh's royal cypher, consisting of intertwined letters beneath a coronet, appears in the lower left field.
