The portrait is based on the Raphael Maklouf or Ian Rank-Broadley style, with the Queen's hair drawn up beneath the crown. The circumferential legend reads ELIZABETH II · ASCENSION ISLAND · 2021 · in Latin capitals, separated by raised dots, and the denomination ONE CROWN appears in the lower field. | Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse depicts a three-quarter-length portrait of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, shown in profile facing right, dressed in the full uniform of an Admiral of the Fleet of the Royal Navy, complete with peaked cap and epaulettes. He stands at the bow or bridge rail of a naval vessel, hands clasped, with a stylised seascape and billowing clouds rendered in the background field. Two diagonal ribbon-like banners bearing the inscriptions ADMIRAL OF THE FLEET and HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS / THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH traverse the lower centre of the design. The Duke of Edinburgh's royal cypher, consisting of intertwined letters beneath a coronet, appears in the lower left field.
