Reverse description A boldly rendered action scene depicting Norwegian resistance hero Gunnar Sønsteby in wartime attire, shown leaping dynamically across a rooftop or elevated structure with a satchel charge at his feet, evoking the sabotage of the Nazi recruitment centre in Oslo. Urban architecture with period-appropriate building facades fills the background, while radiating lines in the upper field suggest an explosion or flash. The legend NO. 24 GUNNAR SØNSTEBY arcs along the upper border, and RECRUITMENT CENTRE IN RUIN curves along the lower border, all in raised Latin lettering.

Additional information

Gunnar Sønsteby was Norway's most decorated resistance fighter of the Second World War, operating under the codename "Kjakan" as part of the Oslo Gang — a Milorg-linked sabotage unit responsible for destroying Nazi forced-labour records and disrupting German occupation infrastructure. The recruitment centre referenced in this coin's title alludes to his early wartime activity connecting young Norwegians to clandestine Allied networks, before he was exfiltrated to Britain for SOE training in 1943.

Gibraltar has issued Norwegian resistance-themed commemoratives as part of a broader Sønsteby series. Gold-plated cupro-nickel crowns of this specification are a well-worn vehicle for the territory's commemorative program.
