Beschrijving voorzijde Central field dominated by a patriarchal cross with splayed arms, rendered in low relief characteristic of hammered billon coinage. The cross is enclosed within a raised inner circle, separating it from the surrounding marginal legend. The circumferential Latin legend reads ✠ HIERO • PRIOLI • DVX, identifying Girolamo Priuli as Doge, with a cross pattee serving as the initial mark. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven in thickness, as is typical of mid-sixteenth-century Cypriot hammered issues struck at Nicosia.

Aanvullende informatie

Girolamo Priuli served as Doge of Venice from 1559 until his death in 1567, a tenure defined almost entirely by the catastrophic loss of Cyprus to Ottoman forces — though that fall came in 1570, just after his reign. The crazia was the workhorse copper-silver coin of Venetian Cyprus, circulating among a population that Venice administered at arm's length, more as a commercial asset than a sovereign territory.

The CNI VII reference range spanning twelve die varieties for this type reflects how actively these small billon pieces turned over in local markets.
