El Salvador's Banco Central de Reserva was itself only established in 1934, making this 1938 issue part of the earliest generation of notes the institution produced. Waterlow & Sons handled the printing, as they did for a significant portion of Latin American central bank business during the interwar period — their London operation competed aggressively with American Bank Note and Bradbury Wilkinson for precisely these contracts.
The colón had replaced the peso in 1919, pegged to the US dollar at two colones to one dollar, a rate that held with unusual stability through the Depression years largely because El Salvador's monetary policy was anchored to coffee export revenues rather than gold reserves.
