Above the numeral, the word ESSAI appears in smaller raised capital letters, identifying this piece as a pattern or trial strike. The central device is framed by a wreath of laurel and palm branches, tied at the base with a ribbon bow, with a small floral rosette at the junction. The design is enclosed within a beaded border consistent with the obverse.

Essai pieces — trial strikes submitted for official approval — were produced in multiple metals before nickel was ultimately rejected in favor of aluminum-bronze for the circulating issue. This piece represents the nickel candidate that lost.
