One of hundreds of emergency fractional issues that flooded central Mexico during the Constitutionalist period, when coin shortages became acute enough that municipal districts, shops, and military commanders all began printing their own change. Matamoros de Izúcar, the Puebla district in question, issued these cartones — as locals called them — on pressed cardboard rather than banknote paper, which was simply unavailable.
